John is as devoted and passionate about music education as he is about performance and composition. He holds teaching posts at Birmingham Conservatoire and Royal Holloway University and has led workshops and individual lessons at the Dartington International Summer School in Devon and the Saarwellingen Jazz Summer School in Germany. His ears are periodically put to use in auditions for the National Youth Jazz Orchestra and Collective and as an external examiner at Trinity Laban in London.

Many students have gone on to have notable careers of their own in recent years, including the Peter Whittingham award-winner and Yamaha Jazz Scholar Mark Pringle, Toby Boalch, Andrew Woodhead, David Ferris, Harry Bolt, Jacky Naylor, Stella Roberts, Oliver Chalk, and Elliott Sansom – one of the six finalists of the BBC Young Jazz Musician Award 2016 and a nominee for the Worshipful Company of Musicians Jazz Award.
