Pianist and educator John Turville has established himself as a mainstay of the UK and European contemporary jazz scenes in his varied roles as sideman, co-leader and trio/quartet leader. So it’s testament to his considerable reputation that this debut quintet release, Head First, should include the estimable names of saxophonist Julian Argüelles, double bassist Dave Whitford, drummer James Maddren; and, perhaps a new name to some, versatile trumpeter Robbie Robson.
The John Turville TrioJohn Turville/Chris Hill/Ben Reynolds
The John Turville Trio are one of the foremost UK piano trios, with a sound inspired by world music styles such as tango, rhythmic contemporary jazz from the UK and downtown New York but with a strong grounding in the tradition. Their two albums, ‘Midas’ and ‘Conception’ have been the winners of multiple awards including the PRS Promoters Choice Award in 2009, Parliamentary Award for ‘Best Album’ in 2010 and the MOJO#3 jazz album of the year in 2012 for Conception. They have a new album planned for release in late 2017.
The trio have toured throughout the UK, including sets at Kings Place, Ronnie Scotts, Pizza Express Dean St, and at the Manchester, Scarborough and London festivals as well as number of extensive national tours.
Almagro EnsembleLucy Waterhouse/John Turville/Chris Allard/Tom Mason/Bartosz Glowacki
Almagro Ensemble is a new group comprising some of the most exciting players and composers in the UK. We aim to present some of the new innovations in tango from Argentina to a European audience, commission new works from Argentine composers and compose brand new music exploring the space between the tango, jazz and contemporary classical worlds.
With Astor Piazzolla as a starting point, the Almagro Ensemble focuses on contemporary repertoire from Argentina crossing the boundaries of tango, jazz and contemporary classical music from Buenos Aires based composers Diego Schissi, Ramiro Gallo and Sonia Possetti as well as original compositions and new commissions. We are also aiming to collaborate with contemporary dancers and choreographers in the future to create a contemporary show that takes tango as its starting point.
SolsticeTori Freestone/Jez Franks/John Turville/Dave Manington/George Hart/Brigitte Beraha
Take six of the foremost composers and musicians from the thriving East London jazz scene, add in a generous dash of friendship, a smattering of diverse influences, lightly season with a pinch of inspiration, and simmer on a low heat for a couple of years. When the music is good and tender, throw in a couple of gourmet gigs around the UK and you’re ready to sample the delightful delicacies and aural ambrosia served up by Solstice.
Having toured with their own groups extensively throughout the UK, Europe and some other planets with their own projects and artists such as Kenny Wheeler, Tim Garland, Andy Sheppard, Gilad Atzmon, Dave Binney, Django Bates, Jasper Hoiby and Ivo Neame, the group have now come together united by a shared love of music and food to write and eat collectively.
They have a unified sound drawing on influences from Brazil, New York, and France such as Hermeto Pascoal, Edward Simon and Pierre de Bethmann, whilst retaining a uniquely British identity. Their culinary and musical explorations continue with the release of their debut album Alimentation.
